Diving in Costa Verde

One of the most important regions for divers in Brazil is Ilha Grande Bay is also known as Costa Verde. This region is located between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, the two biggest cities in Brazil. Diving in Costa Verde, you will find calm waters, and variable visibility ranging from 5 to 15 meters (16 to 49 feet) and temperature that goes from 20 to 24ºC (68 to 75º F). All year round you will find green tropical landscapes and an immense rainforest. This region is also filled with small friendly towns with good restaurants and small hotels. Make sure you have plenty of time to visit the many beaches, waterfalls, trails, and islands of the region. One of the most outstanding dive sites in Costa Verde is Jorge Grego Island. Paraty is a colonial town filled with history and culture, that should definitely be part of your itinerary; this is a recommended dive spot for beginners with warm waters and no strong currents. The largest town of Ilha Grande is Vila de Abraao; here, you can relax on the beaches, visit an abandoned maximum security prison, or dive in the crystalline waters that have high visibility during summer. Adventurers can also go kayaking, surfing, and even rafting in this area.
