They are known as the Cyclades because the islands are arranged in a generally circular pattern around the central island of Delos. Being the center of this natural circle has made Delos a sacred island to the people of Greece and is known as an important mythological, historical and archeological place. There are somewhere in the neighborhood of 220 islands, that make up the Cyclades. The most well-known island is probably Mykonos and the largest is Naxos. The diving off many of these islands is amazing. The waters that surround them are home to everything from both ancient and modern wrecks to caves, walls, and reefs, not to mention some amazing volcanic underwater scenery, such as the caldera you can dive near Santorini. The area is incredibly rich with Mediterranean marine life which makes for spectacular diving experiences. There are five of these islands that are best known for their diving experiences and when visiting this area, they are all worth checking out for different reasons. These top diving islands are Antiparos, Amorgos, Ios, and Naxos and well wort a visit by both beginners and more advanced divers.
