Extending more than 212 square kilometers (132 square miles), Lake Maggiore represents the largest lake in the southern part of the country. It is situated on the southern edge of the Alps and lies between Switzerland and Italy. Even though major part of the lake is in Italy, the Swiss side hosts the Brissago Islands.
