Murcia’s coast, known as Costa Cálida, stretches for 250km (155 miles), from el Mojón in the North close to Alicante to Águilas, South West Murcia, near Almería. Alternating between wild and unspoilt rocky areas to miles of calm waters with sandy shores, the province offers something for every diver. The region also has a number of areas under different statutes of protection. In particularly, the marshy area of San Pedro del Pinatar is worth a visit. Mar Menor or Small Sea, one of Murcia’s major diving sites for beginners and intermediate diver, is the largest natural lake of Spain and the largest salty lagoon in Europe. A popular holiday destination, it is separated from the Mediterranean Sea by a 22km (17 miles) slender sandy strip known as La Manga, and has been declared a Specially Protected Area of Mediterranean Importance (SPAMIs) by the United Nations. With its splendid calm and warm waters, together with excellent visibility, and sunshine 300 day of the year, some say Murcia is the Mediterranean’s best kept secret for scuba diving.
